A Classic of Scandinavian Design Debuts as Wallpaper
Views: 502

Feathr, the home of artisan wallpaper, has collaborated with renowned Finnish designer, Johanna Gullichsen, to make her classic fabric designs available as wallpaper for the first time. Two Johanna Gullichsen designs - Nereus and Raita - are the first to be reimagined by Feathr as wallpapers, and offer a stunning range of classic and contemporary colours.

Johanna Gullichsen has built a reputation as one of Finland’s most sought after designers. Since 1989, Johanna Gullichsen Textile Craft & Design has been committed to honest design and a modern interpretation of Scandinavian textile traditions. Bold and simple patterns, natural materials, a down to earth sensibility - her style is all about comfort, colour, and ease-of-use. Her designs can be combined with either modern or traditional interiors.

Finnish interiors start-up, Feathr, works with a community of internationally acclaimed contemporary artists to design and produce designer wallpaper and wall murals. Combining a unique and diverse artist portfolio, fresh design, and technical innovation, Feathr has quickly built a global reputation as an exciting and innovative design house.

The new collaboration features designs that represent Johanna Gullichsen’s distinctive design style. “Nereus” has a clear and rhythmical pattern constructed of squares and blocks, while “Raita” celebrates the subtle, organic stripe that forms the backdrop to “Nereus”. Both designs elevate their structured geometric form by retaining organic, uneven lines that reflect Gullichsen’s original handweaving on the loom.

The two wallpapers are cleverly designed to be used both independently and side by side, with perfectly complementary design features and colour schemes. Both designs come in a matching range of colours, including classic Pearl, Alabaster, and Light Blue, along with rich Ochre and Dark Blue.

Johanna Gullichsen commented, "Handweaving with the loom is my inspiration for exploring techniques and patterns. That’s how most of my designs are born. Craft is a living design tool for me, always included in the narrative of my textiles, so I’m delighted to see how flawlessly my designs have transposed from textiles to wallcoverings.”

Tom Puukko, Founder of Feathr commented, “Our whole ethos is about bringing incredible creative talent into wallpaper design: Johanna is a Finnish design legend, so we are very excited to be collaborating with her. Her designs look stunning as wallcoverings, and we’re thrilled to be helping to introduce her designs to a whole new audience.”

Nereus and Raita are offered on Feathr’s luxurious non-woven wallcovering, which is suitable for both residential and commercial use, along with vinyl wallcovering materials designed exclusively for commercial use. Nereus and Raita are priced from $169 / €149 / £129 per 50cm x 10m roll, and are available for worldwide delivery from www.feathr.com.

About Johanna Gullichsen
Finnish textile designer, Johanna Gullichsen, was born in Somero, southern Finland. Before taking an interest in textiles, she studied art history, literature, and languages at the University of Helsinki. She then pursued an education in the skill of weaving at Porvoo Crafts School.

Gullichsen describes her approach to design: "Handweaving with the loom is my inspiration for exploring techniques and patterns. That’s how most of my designs are born. Craft is a living design tool for me, always included in the narrative of my textiles. I am especially interested in the construction of fabrics, and I am drawn to technically challenging designs, even though the final product might seem simple. The ready-made products that I design are defined by the fabric itself; by its material or by its pattern."
