Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – The construction industry is in a position to make impactful change in its ecological footprint. In tandem with Malaysia’s booming construction sector, which contributed RM53.44 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022, the call to level-up sustainable practices and reduce carbon footprint grows louder as the impact of climate change grows in intensity.
According to University of Nottingham Malaysia, Head of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Professor Dominic C.Y Foo, the safe boundary of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) concentration for planet earth should be kept at 350 parts per million (ppm). However, recorded data reveals that Malaysia had high peak CO2 concentrations reaching 417 ppm in May 2020.
Considering the increasing population and economic development in Malaysia, a complete cessation of construction is unrealistic. However, the integration of sustainability measures, such as securing green certifications for projects and using eco-friendly materials, offers a promising avenue to mitigate the environmental impact.
Recognising this, CIDB will feature engaging dialogues at the International Construction Transformation Conference 2023 (ICTC 2023) and BuildXpo’s open forums centred around the theme, "Leading ESG in Construction". The discussions complement BuildXpo 2023, hosted by CIDB Malaysia and organised by Qube Integrated Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. in conjunction with ICW 2023 (International Construction Week).
International Construction Transformation Conference 2023 (14 Nov and 15 Nov)
Held in conjunction with the International Construction Week (ICW) 2023, ICTC features a host of local and international industry captains sharing building and construction best practices and innovations aligned to the ESG framework. These include topics on ESG: The Public Listed Companies (PLC) Transformation Programme by Bursa Malaysia, Sustainable Finance Initiatives by leading banking institutions, and case studies on sustainable infrastructures from around the world such as Kota Seribu Galur in Indonesia and The Meydan Project in Dubai among others.
BuildXpo Open Forums (15 Nov to 17 Nov)
Subsequently, the open forums held in line with BuildXpo extends the conversation with insights ranging from sustainable materials to cutting-edge project management techniques led by thought leaders. These include discourse on timber verification services and sustainable sourcing (Topic: Timber Verification Service - Are You Aware? and Topic: Timber as Construction Materials by The Malaysian Timber Industry Board (MTIB). Other agencies featured include the Malaysian Green Building Council, which will delve into the topic of Building Materials Performance and Certifications, discussing the benefits of using timber for environmentally conscious projects.
The forums will also feature case studies from the oil and gas sector (Topic: Offshore Facilities Load Out – Case Study of Jacket Superstructure Loadout by Strand Jacking Skidding Method by Petronas engineers) and examine disruptive technology innovations in the field (Topic: Disruptive Technology Innovation During Critical Heavy Structure Load Out Operation).
Businesses and government agencies looking to migrate and navigate cloud-based technology to enhance efficiency and transparency in construction projects will find the session on Cloud-Based Contract Administration System for JKR / PWD Standard Form of Contract, particularly useful.
On the ESG application and excellence front, project implementation experts will be sharing first-hand experience during the Innovative Project Management for ESG Excellence: Exploring Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) in Construction session. Flood-resistant housing and its versatility and durability in the face of climate impact is another topic set to facilitate engaging discourse during the Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) - Construction of Flood House session.
