Italy-based contractor Astaldi has won an EPC contract in India to build three lots of the Mumbai Metro Rail Project. The company will be involved in the Wadala-Kasarwadavali section of the North-South Metro Line 4 of the project.

This new contract marks Astaldi’s entry into India. The company will carry out the project in partnership with the Indian contractor Reliance Infrastructure Limited, with which Astaldi is also assessing additional opportunities at a local level in the transport infrastructure sector.

Under the agreement, both companies will design and develop approximately 20 km of railway viaducts and 18 elevated stations, as part of the project linking the Wadala district (in the centre of the city of Mumbai) with the Thane district. The work will be subdivided into three lots: Wadala-Chembur section (Package 8, with 6.4 km of viaduct, six stations and two interconnections); Gandinagar Junction-Bhandup Sonapur section (Package 10, with 6.7 km of viaduct and six stations); and Kapurbawdi-Kasarvadavali (Thane) section (Package 12, with 6.8 km of viaduct and six stations).

The work is planned to have a 30-month duration, with start-up following the official signing of the contract, which is expected to take place soon. Total cost of the contract amounts to €168 million, of which Astaldi’s share is €84 million. The contract was awarded by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Versova-Bandra Sea Link

Astaldi has also secured another EPC contract in the country. This second project is to build the Versova-Bandra Sea Link in Mumbai, in partnership with Reliance Infrastructure.

Located about 900-1,800 m from the coast of Mumbai, the project will require the construction of complex works at sea and stretch for a length of approximately 17.7 km, linking the neighbourhoods of Versova and Branda. The main bridge will also include the construction of a cable-stayed bridge and three bridges of variable section, with a main span of 100 m. The work is expected to be completed within 60 months, with start-up due shortly.

The contract was awarded by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). It amounts to €780 million, of which Astaldi’s share is €390 million.

According Astaldi, this latest contract confirms its leadership in the bridge sector, in which the company is now the world’s number-three contractor.

Astaldi operates in more than 20 countries worldwide, working on various projects including bridges, bored tunnels, highways, MRTs, high-speed railways and dams, among others. The company is also involved in the hospital/medical sector. Strengthening globally, Astaldi has recently opened an office in Singapore.
