Malaysia-based Gamuda Berhad, together with Taiwanese company Asia World Engineering & Construction Co (AWEC), has secured a contract totalling NT$8,700,000,000 (approximately RM1.28 billion) for the construction of Taoyuan City underground railway project - package CJ18 PingZhen commuter station.

Awarded by the Taiwan Ministry of Transportation and Communications’ (MOTC) Railway Bureau, the project is scheduled for completion within 96 months. It will be undertaken by an unincorporated 60:40 joint venture comprising Gamuda and AWEC respectively.  

Gamuda said with the recent rapid development of Taoyuan, the local government is strategically expanding its infrastructure plan, which includes upgrading the commuter services by relocation of railway tracks and stations from above-ground to underground.

This new project involves the construction of a 3.734-km underground twin-bound railway track with an underground commuter station at PingZhen, which is located beneath the existing train station. The new underground alignment will optimise and promote efficient use of land in PingZhen District.

The scope of works for the project covers: civil engineering and M&E works for PingZhen commuter station; construction of a 3.734-km underground twin-bound railway track by cut-and-cover method (excluding permanent rail installation); ZhongFeng bridge protection works; relocation of LaoJie river bridge; construction of a temporary PingZhen above-ground commuter station (about 44 m long, 6.5 m wide and 10 m high, featuring two levels); and construction of a permanent PingZhen underground commuter station (about 341 m long, 17 m wide and 15 m deep, featuring two levels).

When completed, the project is expected to create safer and reliable urban mobility and reduce traffic congestion faced by Taoyuan residents.
